Association Business Solutions (ABS) has developed The Municipal Monitor™, a valuable member benefit that can be tailored for your group.

Over the last 10 years, many issues that were once handled at the state level have been shifted to local government. Keeping your members and clients up-to-date on local happenings is vital to any regional organization. Timely and relevant information can make a huge impact on business decisions. Association Business Solutions (ABS) has developed The Municipal Monitor™, a valuable tool that can be tailored for your Association, Chamber or company.

ABS researches and writes a quick and easy-to-read municipal update to give your members timely information on what’s going on in the district governments where they operate. Whether it is passage of a new law that affects business transactions or government plans for a major redevelopment project that could impact the local market, ABS will report on it to help keep your constituents better informed.

In addition to the newsletter, ABS can provide a menu of other related services focusing on municipal concerns for your members:

• Providing your organization unified representation on any major issue affecting the constituents

• Working with your legislative committee to coordinate municipal outreach with state and federal efforts

• Serving as a point of contact for members who want additional information on a particular issue. Members call us directly for research and follow-up.

• Promoting members’ views on proposed and/or enacted municipal ordinances to local officials

• Facilitating meetings between members and municipal and/or county officials on various issues of concern

• Surveying members to ensure focus on municipal issues of greatest concern

• Representing members at various county and local meetings and functions

• Supplying background information of each municipality for your website

• Monitoring, reviewing, and/or analyzing local legislation and regulations

Contact ABS to develop a customized program for your organization.

As part of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), ABS is pleased to co-sponsor an event on November 18 entitled “Starting a Company: From Idea to Reality” (http://www.integra-ls.com/event/). Read on for ideas about how you can get involved!

Young men and women intrigued by entrepreneurship can learn more about it during Global Entrepreneurship Week, November 17 to 23.

The worldwide initiative is designed to inspire, connect, inform, mentor and engage the next generation of entrepreneurs, defined as people under 30 years old.

More than 60 countries around the world have signed on as participants. During the week, a series of events will be held on international, national and local levels. Activities will include invention competitions, entrepreneurship film festivals, networking events, school-based activities and local entrepreneurship summits.

While global in scope, at its heart the week is a local initiative reflecting the customs and entrepreneurial culture of each community. After all, what works in Boise, Idaho might be quite different from what works in Bangalore, India. For example, the Netherlands is launching its version of the week from the floor of Euronext, and Chile is planning a 10K race.

Global Entrepreneurship Week was initiated by the Kauffman Foundation in the U.S. and Make Your Mark in the United Kingdom. Global sponsors are Ernst & Young, IBM and NYSE.

The Mayors Wellness Campaign launched their new website at http://www.mayorswellnesscampaign.org. The Mayors Wellness Campaign, an initiative of the NJ Health Care Quality Institute, is an organization whose goal is educating and motivating local civic leaders to improve the health of their communities.

The new website offers tools, grant information, and other resources for New Jersey public officials to implement active living lifestyles in their constituency in an effort to reduce the skyrocketing health care costs that result from the obesity problem in New Jersey.

“Not only in New Jersey, but across the country, people are becoming increasingly unhealthy as a direct result of obesity-related conditions, ” says David Knowlton, President and CEO of the NJ Health Care Quality Institute. “We see this as particularly problematic among children. Recent studies have indicated that if the current trends in childhood obesity continue, our next generation may have shorter life expectancies than their parents.”

The Mayors Wellness Campaign, or MWC, hopes by educating local public officials, such as town mayors and other decision makers, they may enact initiatives at the local community level to promote healthy and active lifestyles for everyone. Their website offers a number of case studies and examples of towns which have successfully practiced some of these initiatives, such as the “Shapedown” at the Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside, NJ, and the “Walk Metuchen” program in Metuchen, NJ.

“Talking about the obesity problem is not going to get people physically fit, ” says Judith Doyle, the Director for the Mayors Wellness Campaign. “We encourage the mayors of each city in New Jersey to come to our website and sign a pledge that they will try and work towards the goal of improving the health of their community.”

If you live in New Jersey, you can come to the MWC website home page and click on your county’s name to see if your mayor has pledged to start any healthy programs in your area. If your city or town isn’t listed, you can ask your local mayor to visit the site and learn more about what he or she can do to promote healthy initiatives where you live.

Production, planning and content management of the new MWC website was provided by Trenton-based Association Business Solutions, http://www.absnj.com. The website was designed and programmed by local New Jersey web design and marketing company, ITCN, located on the web at http://www.itcn.com.

Founded in 1997 and partially funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the NJHCQI brings together all key stakeholders to make real and measurable improvements in New Jersey’s health care system. NJHCQI seeks to empower health care purchasers and consumers by publishing the results of objective research, comparative data on providers, and other pertinent educational information so that purchasers and consumers may adopt value-based purchasing practices and be able to make informed decisions on the merits of various health care programs, treatments and services. NJHCQI was designated as the lead agency in New Jersey for the national Leapfrog Group effort in April 2002.
